Add Realistic Bodycam Compression and Low-Light Artifacts

Under considerationby blake · 02 Sept

Improve the bodycam aesthetic by adding realistic camera artifacts that become more noticeable in dark or poorly lit environments. Low-light areas could display stronger video compression, color banding, noise, and reduced image clarity. Bright light sources could also appear overexposed, with stronger bloom or haze around them. These effects would help the image feel more like footage recorded by a real body camera with limited image quality and dynamic range.

I second this. People are caught on how realistic the game looks, but they forget that they're supposed to be seeing the game through crappy bodycam footage which is the art style selected by the devs.

This is quite an interesting idea that I'd like to see tested, with the caveat that if such effects are going to degrade visibility for the purposes of realism, they should be anchored to a meaningful game mechanic; such as to provide useful feedback to the player. The number, intensity, frequency, and duration of various effects could each be used to indicate status modifiers of the player without introducing additional HUD elements. This could replace the current greying of the screen when taking non-lethal shots and actually makes a lot more sense than the current approach.
