Add Dolby Atmos and Surround Sound Support

Under considerationby James · 30 Aug

Add support for Dolby Atmos and standard 5.1 and 7.1 surround sound systems. Proper multichannel output would improve the positioning of gunfire, footsteps, bullet cracks, and environmental sounds. Dolby Atmos could also provide more accurate vertical audio for compatible home theatre and headphone setups.

Friends told me about this game because they wanted me to test my sound system (high-end time-aligned 7.1, 2 supertweeters, 5 subwoofers and a 6-shaker bass array) on it and I liked the new approach, but the sound mix doesn't seem suited for speakers just yet. Personally I'd prefer NOT to support proprietary formats like Dolby Atmos and would much rather have open-source or accessible paths to utilize three-dimensional sound with speakers; OpenAL Soft does this wonderfully with ambisonic filters that users can predefine. One thing that struck me immediately when running the game is that, when firing, a TON of low frequency information is sent to the LFE (with barely any FL+FR+C) and most of what you hear is the reflections and not the gun you just fired. When reloading, for example, sounds make sense. But when firing it's as if the samples are missing and all you hear is the walls. And a lot of very low frequency information. Happy to collaborate and assist in improving this.

THIS! I use Dolby Atmos spatial sound personally. Adding surround sound options would make this game even more immersive!
