Add an Option to Disable Film Grain

Doneby Peltusa · 25 Aug

At 1440p and lower resolutions, some post-processing effects, particularly film grain, appear much stronger than at 4K and significantly reduce visibility. This can make it difficult to distinguish players from the environment, especially for people with impaired or blurry vision. Please review how these effects scale with resolution and add separate settings to reduce or disable film grain and blur. This would improve accessibility and prevent display resolution from creating a visibility disadvantage.

I disagree with this. The film grain is subtle and part of the game. Disabling it might give an advantage.

The option to disable film grain should be brought back. The film grain makes the game look very blurry, fuzzy, and not unclear. With film grain we can't see the full beautiful quality of Bodycam.

The first time I hopped into the playtest, I noticed one thing immediately, which was the graphics. I can see a massive fidelity change in terms of lighting and textures, but something that immediately caught my eye was the resolution. I'm playing on a 1440p monitor, and some of the filters drag the quality down to 720p, making maps like trenches impossible to see in. I think a few options in the settings to enable or disable certain bodycam filters would be excellent more specifically the grain! These changes would allow players that extra visibility without taking too much away from the experience, and who doesn't like toggles that can improve your game experience? This is just something I noticed, and I hope it will be looked at because it seems like some filters don't properly scale, with 4k looking like they have no grain and no blur, while 1440p and below have this really strong grain effect that can hinder visibility and make the gameplay experience far less enjoyable, as someone with vision impairment this feature would be a great help. Here is some images that I think could help my claim and showcase the impact. The mlock19 being a screenshot from my game and the revolver being a screenshot from the devlog. Resolution shouldn't be the deciding factor in whether you win or lose a fight or even whether you enjoy or not enjoy the game. Since I have blurry vision bodycam already looks blurry but with the added screen grain It's extremely hard for me to tell a player apart from a tree.

The game has too much grain. Maybe add an option to turn off grain?

for me when i tried playtest i was like ehm why my game looks that much terrible like damn on videos it was crazy quality and im playing 30% of the game i feel like it... 7800xt on 1080p and the game for me looks the same ( i know its not the same and i was very excited to play something new after this update but nope resolution for me look the same as before i feel weird cuz when im gonna look on the original video from bodycam its beautiful damnnn and mine... gg)

basically, every game gives you the option to remove it, and it was on the other version. it's cool for cinematics but not realistic, have you seen gopro videos? they don't have film grain, having the option to pick or choose is better and looked way more realistic on my machine (5080rtx) than film grain. I think since this is a game looking out of a body camera, this camera needs to have really good quality as if you're recording on actual military equipment.

I play on 1440p and am colorblind, I think the grain is actually very subtle (much more subtle compared to the old version) and belongs in the game.

In the most recent update, the option to remove the grain filter was removed; please add it back.

  • CJ02 Sept

maybe make an option where you can make the bodycam less grainy because when i play its like i have put film grain on at a extremely high intensity and i like it it adds the effect of the bodycam just think its to strong

Can we get the film grain toggle back? And all the old graphics settings?

I both agree and disagree with this but i ultimately upvoted it. This is a decision that the devs have to make for how they want their game to look. I see arguments on both sides. keep the forced film grain for the realistic bodycam effect or allow it to be disabled for better clarity. I think the best decision is to force it on or off cause if u allow it to be optional then those with it off will have an advantage, Im happy with it either forced on or off but i dont think it as an option is good.

It would be great to bring back individual graphics toggles for Film Grain and Chromatic Aberration. BODYCAM has a very distinctive visual style, and effects like grain and chromatic aberration can add to that aesthetic, but they are also very subjective. Some players prefer the cinematic camera look, while others prefer a cleaner and sharper image. Having separate on/off options would allow players to choose without changing the intended look of the game for everyone. This could also be useful for players trying to improve image clarity, especially when using different anti-aliasing or upscaling settings. Ideally, the graphics menu would include: Film Grain: On / Off Chromatic Aberration: On / Off The effects can still remain enabled by default if they are part of BODYCAM’s intended presentation, but giving players the option to disable them would provide more control over image quality and personal preference.

After reviewing the comments, I wonder if a middle ground could be found? I see both sides of the coin. Especially for users with low resolution, I can see how an admirable and well intentioned realism feature could also be a disadvantage for some players/systems. If it conflicts with the vision/philosophy of the game to the point where removal is not an option, could it be reduced/made more subtle? I play on a 4k 240hz monitor with a 5080/9900x, and while not game breaking, it is noticeable and think it would be a net benefit to the community to at least provide the option to remove it.

It’s literally a game based around film footage…the grain adds to the immersive atmosphere and realism imo. Adding a disable option would be catering to the tryhards who just want to min/max settings for a competitive edge.

I don't think film grain really works for the bodycam aesthetic since well film grain is for film but a bodycam uses a digital sensor, so I'd like to see that the film grain get removed in favor of digital grain. It could work sorta like the new sound system however instead of sound it's light, because in a brightly lit environment the sensor is receiving a strong signal and therefore is outputting a clean picture, but when in a darkly lit environment the sensor isn't getting as strong of a signal and trying to accommodate the weak signal it boosts the sensitivity to try making the image visible causing a lot of colored grain/noise. Just a suggestion that I think would make more sense visual wise, but I'd also like an option to turn this off if I wanted to.

Severe performance and camera stuttering after Locked & Loaded update Since the Locked & Loaded update on September 2, the game feels significantly worse than it did before the update. I'm getting around 80 FPS on an RTX 5060, but the camera movement feels very jerky and doesn't feel like 80 FPS. I've tested both controller and mouse and the problem is present with both. The game also looks noticeably more grainy than before. This wasn't happening before the update. Please investigate the new rendering/frame-pacing and input systems.
